Gyokuro is cultivated under shade and is one of the most expensive pure Japanese teas. Its English translated name is Jade Dew.
Three weeks before harvest, the plantation is completely covered with special sheets to keep the plants in the shade. Hence it is known as a shade-grown tea. The method of shading increases the caffeine level while decreasing the catechin content of the leaves.
The steeped tea leaves you with fresh spinachy, seaweedy and vegetal notes in your mouth. The flavour is sweet and very smooth.
